The University of Tennessee invites nominations and applications for a visionary leader to serve as Chancellor of the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. The Health Science Center (UTHSC), based in Memphis, Tennessee, is a campus of the statewide University of Tennessee System.
UTHSC is a major statewide academic health science center. The Health Science Center enrolls a student body of over 2,800 and employs over 4,000 people, including more than 1,100 faculty members in six colleges. Its academic and strategic partners include Methodist University Hospital, LeBonheur Children’s Medical Center, The Regional Medical Center of Memphis, University Health System (Knoxville), Erlanger Health System (Chattanooga), Baptist Memorial Health System, West Tennessee Health Care (Jackson), St. Francis Hospital, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and Veterans’ Medical Center in Memphis. UTHSC and its affiliated teaching hospitals provide more than one million days of inpatient services and more than two million outpatient visits annually. In addition to the strategic partnerships listed above, affiliations with organizations such as Memphis Bioworks Foundation and Oak Ridge National Laboratory help support UTHSC’s strong commitment to excellent research, a primary area of focus for growth and development.
The Chancellor of the Health Science Center serves as the chief executive officer of the campus, including its other campus locations across the state, and is fully responsible for campus administration and management. The Chancellor articulates the strategic vision for advancing the academic missions of the Colleges of Allied Health Sciences, Dentistry, Graduate Health Sciences, Medicine, Nursing and Pharmacy. The Chancellor reports directly to the President of the University of Tennessee and serves as an officer of the UT Board of Trustees.
The successful candidate must possess a full understanding of academic health science centers and the challenges facing them. Candidates will demonstrate a firm commitment to health sciences education and to biomedical research (basic, clinical and translational), as well as have health care delivery experience in a community like Memphis. He/she must have a demonstrated record of successful leadership and fiscal management experience and exhibit exceptional communication and interpersonal skills. Prior success in building and growing innovative and productive community and healthcare partners is a requirement for the position. Candidates will have a record of demonstrated commitment to diversity, collegiality, collaboration and service. A successful record of substantial fundraising is preferred.
