Grim Statistics
Nearly 70,000 (40,000 elderly) Tennesseans were hospitalized for diseases of the heart in 2002.  About two thirds of people with some form of heart disease had hypertension, 25-30% had diabetes mellitus and 30-40% percent had high cholesterol.  Tennessee ranked sixth highest in mortality from diseases of the heart. Additionally, in Tennessee each year, respiratory diseases account for 5.5% of the deaths, the fourth leading cause.

New strategies and treatment options are coming to light every day.  Heart, Lung, Vascular: Update for Primary Care Providers is a course that can help physicians, nurses, and allied health professionals tackle this looming health issue by providing the latest information and tools from regional experts.

Learning Objectives
Attendees will leave this conference with the basics of cardiology and pulmonary information as well as knowledge of the most recent advances in the field.  At the conclusion of this conference, participants should be able to improve their method of care by using gained knowledge to

  • Recognize symptomatic aortic stenosis presenting as angina in the elderly and determine appropriate use of stress perfusion
  • Identify high-risk patients to screen for abdominal aortic aneurysm
  • Appraise the symptoms of claudication and refer patients with peripheral vascular disease for appropriate intervention and treatment
  • Evaluate latest findings and new treatments for hypertension
  • Select lipid-lowering strategies in at-risk patients based on race and gender groups
