Joint Institutes

The UT–ORNL joint institutes capitalize on areas of mutual strength.

The Joint Institute for Biological Sciences

  • Will be located in an $8-million state-funded building under construction at ORNL
  • Supports research and teaching programs in genomics, bioinformatics and computational biology, molecular structural biology, proteomics, and biomedical technologies
  • Includes Tennessee Mouse Genome Consortium and the Genome Science and Technology Graduate School offered by UT and ORNL

The Joint Institute for Computational Sciences

  • Located in a $9-million state-funded building at ORNL
  • Uses high performance computing to solve complex scientific and engineering problems
  • Offers programs for undergraduates, graduate students, and postdocs
  • Provides access to ORNL terascale computing capabilities
  • Complements the nearby Center for Computational Sciences, soon to be home to the world’s fastest computer

The Joint Institute for Neutron Sciences

  • Will be located in an $8-million state-funded building near the Spallation Neutron Source
  • Conducts programs of research, education, and training in computational science and engineering
  • Will become an intellectual focus for the neutron science community, enhance and support research using powerful neutron beams

The Joint Institute for Advanced Materials

  • Will be located on the UT campus
  • New building funded by more than $20 million in state and federal support
  • Will place the UT-Oak Ridge partnership in a unique position in the nation to deliver on the emerging frontiers of nanoscience

Among other joint UT–ORNL initiatives:

Joint Institute for Heavy Ion Research

  • Includes UT, ORNL, and Vanderbilt University as partners
  • Provides an intellectual center and physical support for researchers who work at the Holifield Heavy Ion Research Facility in Oak Ridge

Joint Institute for Energy and Environment

  • Established by UT, ORNL, and TVA
  • Uses collective resources to solve problems in the areas of natural resources conservation and development, environmental protection, economic development, and education and training
  • Located in Knoxville
