Bredesen Appoints UT Knoxville Student, Faculty Member to University’s Board of Trustees

KNOXVILLE – Gov. Phil Bredesen has announced that J.A.M. “Toby” Boulet, UT Knoxville past faculty senate president, and UT Knoxville undergraduate Carey Smith have been appointed to the nonvoting faculty and student seats on the UT Board of Trustees. The nonvoting appointments are for a one-year term, with a one-year voting term to follow.

Dr. Toby Boulet

Boulet, associate professor of mechanical, aerospace and biomedical engineering, has been a member of the UT Knoxville faculty for more than 25 years and has served on various faculty councils throughout his UT career.  He currently is secretary of the system-wide UT Faculty Council. He was recognized within his department in 2008 with the Outstanding Teaching Award and is a member of several scientific and professional societies, including the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

Boulet earned both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in mechanical engineering from UT Knoxville and completed his doctoral work at Stanford University.

Ms. Carey Smith

Smith, a political science major at UT Knoxville, is from Kingsport, Tenn.

She is in the UT Knoxville Chancellor’s Honors program. As a Tennessee Legislative Intern during the 2010 spring semester, she worked for the UT Office of State Relations in Nashville.  She has been a member of the UT Knoxville Student Government Association and has worked with the Volunteer Girls State program since 2006.

The UT Board of Trustees is the governing body of the University, overseeing the educational and operational activities of the statewide University System.  The 26-member board is comprised of both five ex officio and 21 appointed members. The governor serves as an ex officio voting member of the board and, by election, as chair.
