The UT Board of Trustees approved a $1.8 billion system-wide budget for the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2009. The budget includes $92 million in one-time federal stimulus funding. UT is expected to receive a similar amount next year, but FY 2012 will reflect at least a $66 million reduction in state appropriations. There will be no one-time stimulus funding after two years.
State appropriations make up about 30 percent of the overall $1.6 billion UT System budget. Another 22 percent of revenue comes from tuition and fees, 27 percent from grants and contracts and 10 percent from auxiliaries like athletics, housing and parking. The remaining comes from sales and services, investment income and other sources.

On the flip side is how we spend our money. About 33 percent of expenditures is instruction, 14 percent is research, 11 percent is scholarships and fellowships, about 8 percent is auxiliaries and the rest is divided between academic support, student services, institutional support and maintenance.
For 2008-09, the state of Tennessee had a budget of $27.7 billion. The Legislature appropriated the largest amount of funds to K-12 education and health and social services. Higher education, which includes the UT System and the Tennessee Board of Regents schools, received $1.6 billion in funding from the state combined with $529 million in federal funding and $212 million in tuition and fees.
