Ernest Bernard picked up on the welcoming atmosphere in the UT Department of Entomology and Plant Pathology during his interview 35 years ago. That atmosphere has not changed and he considers himself fortunate to have colleagues who are just as committed to making a significant, positive difference in the department.
“We have a core of faculty who can turn to each other for advice, commiseration and policy development,” Ernest said.
He also enjoys reflecting on the graduate students he has mentored and their achievements.
“I remember every single graduate student clearly and look back on their accomplishments with fondness,” Ernest said.
Ernest and his wife, Stephanie, have two children, Michael and David, who graduated from UT Knoxville. In his free time, Ernest is a philatelist, collecting and studying stamps. He also enjoys film noir, growing irises and hiking in alpine tundra.
